It’s been seven years, but for any Lakesider, the vivid memories of May 14th, 2017, feel as fresh as the spray off Llyn Tegid on a blustery morning. That was the day Bala Town, our beloved club from the heart of Gwynedd, ascended to the summit of Welsh football, famously lifting the JD Welsh Cup after an heroic performance against perennial giants, The New Saints.
For a club that began its journey decades ago, navigating the lower echelons of Welsh football and steadily climbing through the Cymru Alliance to reach the Cymru Premier, winning the national cup was more than just a trophy; it was the ultimate vindication of years of hard work, unwavering dedication, and the relentless spirit of a community-driven club. TNS, with their league titles and European pedigree, were the undisputed heavyweights, making Bala Town the quintessential underdog, a role we've often relished.
The journey to the final in Bangor was arduous, a true testament to the squad’s grit. Each round presented its own challenge, but with every victory, the belief grew stronger, both within the dressing room at Maes Tegid and amongst the faithful who followed the team across the country. The buzz around Bala in the weeks leading up to the final was palpable. Flags adorned shop windows, conversations in the local taverns revolved solely around the big day, and a real sense of collective destiny permeated the air.
On the day itself, Nantporth Stadium was awash with a sea of blue and white. The Lakesiders’ contingent, a passionate, vocal army, outnumbered and out-sang the TNS support, creating an atmosphere charged with anticipation. From the first whistle, our lads played with a fire and determination that matched the fervour in the stands. It was a performance built on resilience, tactical astuteness, and an unshakeable belief that this was our moment.
The game itself was a pulsating encounter. Bala Town famously defeated The New Saints 2-1, with the decisive goals sending ripples of pure ecstasy through the travelling support. Each clearance, each tackle, each pass was met with thunderous applause, and when the final whistle blew, signalling one of Welsh football’s biggest ever cup upsets, the roar that erupted from the Lakesiders faithful was deafening. Grown men wept, strangers embraced, and a collective euphoria washed over everyone connected to the club.
The images of Colin Caton, our long-serving gaffer, and the captain lifting that iconic trophy will forever be etched in club folklore. The parade back through Bala, with the cup proudly displayed, was an unforgettable experience – a town united in celebration, honouring its heroes. It was a moment that transcended football, showcasing the incredible power of sport to unite and inspire a community.
That 2017 Welsh Cup triumph remains a touchstone for Bala Town. It proved that with heart, commitment, and a tight-knit community behind you, anything is possible. It’s a moment we reflect upon with immense pride, a benchmark for future generations, and a powerful reminder of the incredible journey our Lakesiders have undertaken.
