Bala Town is set to face off against Penybont in the Cymru Premier, but who are their opponents? Penybont were founded in 2013 following the merger of Bridgend Town and Bryntirion Athletic. Bridgend Town had the more illustrious history of the two sides, winning the English Southern League in 1979-80 and reaching the semi-finals of the Welsh Cup on two occasions.

In their debut season, Penybont finished third, behind Monmouth Town and Taff's Well, and spent six seasons in the second tier of Welsh football before being crowned champions in 2018-19. That title-winning campaign saw them go unbeaten, winning 25 of their 30 matches to secure promotion to the Cymru Premier.

Their first season in the top flight was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the league decided on a points-per-game basis. Penybont avoided relegation, finishing above both Carmarthen Town and Airbus UK Broughton after 25 games.

Since then, the Bont have established themselves as a competitive force in the division. They reached the Welsh Cup final in 2021-22, narrowly losing 3-2 to The New Saints at the Cardiff City Stadium.

The following season saw Penybont finish third in the league, which, following Bala Town's Welsh Cup final defeat, secured automatic qualification for the UEFA Europa Conference League first qualifying round. They faced Andorran side FC Santa Coloma, drawing 1-1 at home before a goalless draw after 90 minutes in the second leg, eventually losing 3-1 on aggregate after conceding twice in extra time.

Penybont returned to European competition this season after finishing second in the Cymru Premier, facing Lithuanian side Kauno Žalgiris. They have had two years in a row of European football facing Santa Coloma once again in their Europa Conference League campaign where they lost 4-0 over two legs to the Andorran side.

Penybont have had a good start to their Novira Cymru Premier campaign. They opened their season with a 0-0 draw against reigning champions The New Saints. They then picked up their first victory of the league campaign after a 2-1 victory over Caernarfon Town on Friday night with goals from new signings Tom Mehew and Ryan Hill.

Manager Rhys Griffiths joined Penybont in 2016 as player-manager and guided the club to promotion to the Cymru Premier in his second season. The former forward enjoyed an 11-year playing career in the Welsh domestic game, representing clubs including Carmarthen Town, Llanelli Town, Port Talbot Town and Newport County.

His most prolific spell came at Llanelli, where he won back-to-back golden boots, scoring 30 and 40 goals respectively. His goalscoring form earned him a move to EFL side Plymouth Argyle in 2012, where he scored on his league debut in a 3-2 victory over Northampton Town.

After 11 appearances and three goals, he returned to Wales before later joining Newport County, where he was part of the side that secured promotion to League Two with a 2-0 win over Wrexham at Wembley. Griffiths returned to Welsh football shortly after, eventually joining Penybont, where he has since overseen 268 matches, winning 114 with a points-per-game average of 1.49.

He was named Cymru Premier Manager of the Season in 2022-23.
